Spring is a-knockin’

Don’t you just love that first day of the year when you feel like you can go out in shorts, a t-shirt and flip-flops? Of course, the flip-flops may be pushing it, but today, in the Washington, D.C. metro area, folks were feeling spring season slowly creeping up on them.

I decided to go for a nice, long run today. I had three dogs barking at me along the way. I think they were just jealous that they were stuck on a leash and I wasn’t. But it was obvious they were in good spirits, too. Who doesn’t love the coming of spring?

I also went for a nice walk in Solomons Island in Calvert County, Md., today. I strolled along a boardwalk on the Patuxent River. The dogs were out there as well. All of them choking themselves in an attempt to break free of their leashes. But I don’t think they cared. They were just so darn excited to be outside. Spring just puts everyone in a good mood doesn’t it? Human or kanine.

It’s amazing to think that just a few weeks ago, the Washington, D.C. area was experiencing a record-breaking blizzard, giving us the biggest total accumulation of snow the area has ever seen, and today we had high temperatures in the 60s. Spring cannot come any sooner!

Redskins, Shanahan making some moves!

So the Washington Redskins cut 10 players today! 10! Mike Shanahan and Bruce Allen are really throwing their weight around early. And I’m loving it.

It was about time they went their separate ways with Antwaan Randle El. I’m sorry, but the guy can’t return punts, which is what he was brought in to do in the first place, and he’s a mediocre receiver. No need for him anymore on a team that’s in somewhat of a rebuilding stage.

Great move getting rid of Rock Cartwright as well. He’s a good locker room guy, but never anything special talent-wise. No need for him on the roster either.

Fred Smoot was another that was just getting up there in age and just needed to be let go.

The only move I questioned here was getting rid of Ladell Betts. The guy is a solid backup, and now we don’t have that. However, the draft is on its way, and who knows what the coaching staff has in mind.

Actually, one more surprise was the cutting of backup QB Todd Collins. Yes, he’s old, but in my opinion is one of the best backup quarterbacks in all of football. He’s proven time and time again that he can step in at any time when the starter is hurt and it’s as if he hasn’t missed a beat. Once again, this could mean things for Colt Brennan? Or bringing in a QB through the draft?

But I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: With the OL cuts, can we PLEASE NOT DRAFT A QB WITH OUR 4TH PICK!? That would be great, thanks. I believe this offensive line is a worse situation right now than our players at the quarterback position.

Redskins’ Chris Samuels out, but will coach

Great to hear that Redskins OL Chris Samuels is going to stick around despite announcing his retirement. Samuels will now be a coaching intern with the team.

I think that is great for the ‘Skins. Their offensive line, while it will hurt from Samuels’ departure, will gain from his knowledge. He’s not some old, washed up guy coaching these players, he knows the guys they’ll be going up against. His knowledge is extremely valuable.

However, please don’t tell me the Redskins are going to be drafting a QB first round, even though they lost their best lineman! They wouldn’t do that…would they?

Hello web world. Long time no talk. So, I’m trying to get back into the blogging thing. I recently purchased Mark S. Luckie’s “The Digital Journalist’s Handbook,” and am learning more about blogging as we speak.

As spring approaches here in our Nation’s capital, I look to write more about my life in general. May not be interesting to most people, but it might be fun for me!

A Little About Myself Today

I don’t usually write about myself on this blog. If you read it, you know it’s usually about the Washington Redskins. And there’s nothing wrong with that, of course. Right?

Well, I thought that this post goes along with the usual Skins theme, but also has a big impact on me.

I always told myself that a dream job of mine would be to work for the Washington Redskins. I have been in broadcasting for the last five years, and I would love to one day cover the Redskins for either a paper, web site or TV station.

Now, this may not seem like anything spectacular, but it is special to me and I wanted to share it. I believe I am on well on my way to living my dream.

I was called the other day by a friend of mine from Towson University and was offered a position as a Technical Assistant at all of the Redskins home games and other events held at FedEx Field. This position will require me to run the score board, maybe operate a camera or be a grip man every now and then.

This may not sound like something to brag about, but to me it’s a step closer to a dream. How many people get the chance to work for a team they’ve worshiped for so long? Not many. And who knows? Maybe this will lead to something bigger.

I will begin the first Redskins preseason game on August 22nd. See you at FedEx Field this season, Redskins fans!

Been a While…But Football Season is Right Around the Corner

I know I haven’t posted for a long time. I have been extremely busy applying for jobs. As everyone knows, it’s a rough market out there. But I hope to be posting more frequently these days with football season starting in less than a month! Well, preseason, anyway.

I wonder, how many people actually think Brett Favre will stay retired? I’m not so sure I’m buying it just yet that he’s not returning. But, who knows? It might be real this time.

I would think, however, that with a running back like Adrian Peterson on your team Brett Favre, even being 39 going on 40 years old, could succeed. I say this because we all know Favre still has the tools to be an NFL quarterback. And we all know that his body isn’t the same as it used to be. But with AP in the backfield, that could take a lot of pressure off Favre to constantly make big plays with his arm.

Like I said, I’m not buying it quite yet. I just think the opportunity for Favre is too perfect right now.

Redskins Draft

Finally! The Redskins will have a pass rush! I am super-psyched about the addition of Texas DE Brian Orakpo. From the draft day video, he seems thrilled to be a Redskin.

I know I’m certainly thrilled to be rooting for him! I think it’s safe to say you can get excited about our defense, now. I think Albert Haynesworth will attract double teams a lot of the time, freeing up Orakpo to get to the quarterback!

I’m not so sure about the Redskins drafting Idaho tight end Eddie Williams. Why do we need another tight end with Chris Cooley and Fred Davis? Also, this guy wasn’t even able to workout in the spring due to injuries. Not so sure that was a safe pick.

Oh well, Orakpo was enough for me. Can’t wait until September!
